Oh, uh, about that firing leakers thing...
|
Oh, MAN! It just gets better and better. Now that it turns out good dog Karl, WAS the leaker, Dubya changes the qualifications for disqualification from "leaker" to "criminal". At first glance, it seems like an example of a phenomenon noted by the late Hunter S. Thompson - "When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro". But, really, it's pretty good. America isn't going to care that Bush CHANGED HIS MIND and by the time Karl Rove is convicted of a crime (if evah), this administration will be bad history - so, no chance of losing the ol' job now. Gee - I wonder what advisor came up with this one? Hmmm...

It's not about what's right or true, not about the real best interests of the target group, and it sure isn't about what's ethically or morally defensible. It's about whatever works. As Molly Ivins pointed out, Rove and the new reds have taken a page from the big R reds of yore - the ends justify the means. It's always been this way for these natural born "cheaters" - from Bush's service dodging to Rove's whisper campaigns, it is and always has been about what they can get away with. The Bush snicker is the native expression of this attitude, yet nobody seems to take it for what it is - the undisguised glee of a mediocre man who knows he is "getting away with it".
And why IS this neglible personality getting away with it? Rove and the media! Sure, Rove didn't fall off the turnip truck yesterday, but if the media was actually DOING ITS JOB they would have called the GOP, the President, Rove and any number of administration officials on the lies, exagerations, mis-statements and just plain fantasy that has characterized the expression of policy in this administration. Given this, the right's accusations of media liberal bias would be funny if they weren't so effective at keeping the reds watching Fox News. Liberal bias?! The problem with the media is not bias, it's competence and commitment. Corporate media oganizations are so busy carrying the administration's water, protecting their own investments and making sure consolidation legislation has smooth sailing that they just plain don't have time for the traditional adversarial watchdog role of the fourth estate.
When was the last time you actually heard a tough question from anybody but Helen Thomas? And how about a followup. And when was the last time a major news organization busted a biggie? Give, up? Me, too. Sometimes it feels as though if it wasn't for Elliot Spitzer, nobody in this country would get called for anything...
